Classic Man, Steven Wilson
27 May 2016 – 10 June 2016
UNIT is pleased to present Classic Man, an exhibition of new works by emerging artist Steven Wilson. Classic Man inaugurates UNIT’s Platform initiative, which supports emerging contemporary artists living and working in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre in developing their practice.
Informed by his personal experiences as a teenager living in the North of England and Wales, Wilson utilises culturally prominent and recognisable audio-visual materials to create artworks which traverse the disciplines of sound, video, sculpture and painting. Classic Man deconstructs commodity fetishism, idolisation, status and working class aspirations through the exploration of capitalist ideology and symbolism.
Focusing on his interest in music, the exhibition contains video and sound works that feature sonically manipulated pop songs which, through their shifted pitch and elongated chord progressions, aim to break apart and re-configure the emotional narratives which underpins contemporary pop music.
The exhibition also features works that explore Wilson’s interest in the seminal aesthetic of 90s dance label Positiva Records and the similarities that can be drawn between the label’s visual brand identity and the oeuvre of American artist John McCracken.
Join us for the preview of Classic Man on Friday 27th May, 6:00-8:00pm. UNIT is currently sited on the second floor of Abingdon Studios, Blackpool, FY1 1DE. Classic Man runs until Friday 10th June. Viewings are by appointment only. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a viewing.
