27 July – 24 August
UNIT, in partnership with Supercollider Contemporary Art Projects, is pleased to announce Anya Hassett as our next PLATFORM artist in residence.
PLATFORM is a comprehensive programme of support for emerging contemporary artists, culminating in an exhibition. PLATFORM is for artists at the beginning of their career, who are creating new work, and exploring and developing their practice.
Hassett is a young artist currently studying for a University of the Arts London diploma in Art and Design, having previously studied Linguistics at University College London. Working predominantly with ceramic and paint, Hassett explores the impact of sensory surroundings upon the visual medium. Her use of colour and shape is bold and bulbous, and projects a vernal curiosity and exuberance. Purposeful in her playfulness and insouciant aesthetic, Hassett’s interpretation of corporeality is fluid and amorphous.
Tapping into the precarious and vulnerable nature of existence, Hassett rejects the formal parameters of the mind-body relationship, and seeks to deconstruct the uncomfortable realities of both her subjective experiences and the human condition. The bold, protuberant incarnations of the physical form in Hassett’s paintings are emotive and stirring.
Reminiscent of Matisse and Schiele, yet distinct in style, Hassett’s work also explores the ontology of womanhood. At once erotic and asexual, Hassett’s representation of the body is provocative, honest and boundless.
Hassett’s residency will begin on 27th July. Join us for the preview on 10th August, 18.00-20.00, at Abingdon Studios*. The exhibition will run until 24th August.
